Should I buy a traditional gas pool heater or a heat pump in Ontario?
The choice depends on your heating goals. A gas pool heater provides rapid, on-demand heating regardless of the outside temperature, making it ideal for weekend swims. A heat pump transfers ambient heat from the air, offering a slower but much more energy-efficient and cost-effective way to maintain a consistent temperature.
- Gas Heaters: Burn natural gas or propane, resulting in much faster heating but higher daily operating costs and carbon emissions.
- Heat Pumps: Work like a reverse air conditioner by pulling heat from the air. They are highly efficient but become less effective when outdoor temperatures drop below 7°C to 10°C (45°F–50°F).
- The Verdict: If you want rapid, occasional heat, choose gas. For consistent, long-term warmth and lower hydro bills, choose a heat pump.
