When it comes to protecting your pool and family over the winter, a safety cover…

When it comes to protecting your pool and family over the winter, a safety cover is the ultimate investment. At Crush Pools, we specialize in providing and installing top-tier safety covers, offering peace of mind and a smooth, easy pool opening next spring.

Understanding Different Mesh Grades

Did you know safety covers come in various grades, and the quality of the material is key to their performance and longevity? The most common types are differentiated by their mesh grade, which affects how much sunlight and debris can penetrate the cover.

5000 Mesh (Standard Shade Mesh)

This is the entry-level mesh. While it offers excellent debris protection, its looser weave allows more sunlight to pass through (up to 95%). This can lead to some algae growth over the winter, especially if your water isn’t perfectly balanced at closing. It typically comes with a 15-year warranty (with 3 years of full coverage and 12 years prorated). Unfortunately this is the most common cover as many pool companies would compete on price selling a less than ideal cover. This level of cover allows too much sunlight to pass through it turning many peoples pools green. That is why at Crush we don’t even offer this cover. Any cover bought through us will be a high quality cover that blocks out the sunlight preventing your pool from going green.

7000 Mesh (High Shade Mesh)

This is a step up, with a tighter weave that blocks more sunlight (up to 97%). This significantly reduces the risk of algae growth, keeping your pool cleaner. It’s a great balance of durability, performance, and cost. This grade often includes a 20-year warranty (with 5 years of full coverage and 15 years prorated). This is the most common cover we sell at Crush. It is a good balance of performance and cost. It also comes in 4 different colour options allowing you to pick the best one for your backyard.

9000 Mesh (Max Shade Mesh)

The premium option, this mesh has the tightest weave, blocking up to 99% of sunlight. This makes it the most effective at preventing algae and keeping your pool water pristine. It’s the best choice for a truly “worry-free” winter and typically comes with the best warranty, such as a 25-year warranty (with 5 years of full coverage and 20 years prorated). This cover comes in one colour (black) and is the best option for people who want to guarantee the sunlight is blocked out. Picking this cover gives you a lot more flexibility on when you choose to close and open your pool as well.

The Importance of Safety Cover Quality

Using a higher-quality mesh reduces the amount of cleaning you’ll have to do at the beginning of the next season. Less sunlight means less algae, which saves you time, effort, and money on chemicals in the spring.

Covers for Any Pool Design

Gone are the days when safety covers were only for simple, rectangular pools. Modern safety covers can be custom-made to fit virtually any pool shape, including those with:

  • Waterfalls and Rock Features: Special cutouts and anchor systems allow the cover to fit snugly around complex features without sacrificing safety.
  • Raised Spas: The cover can be designed to go up and over a raised spa, creating a single, secure barrier for your entire backyard oasis.

The Right Anchors for Your Decking

Installation is as crucial as the cover itself. The anchors used to secure the cover must be specifically chosen for your decking material to ensure a strong, safe fit.

  • Concrete: The most common anchor is a solid brass screw-type or pop-up anchor that sits flush with the deck when not in use. This requires a rotary hammer drill and careful tamping to prevent damage.
  • Interlock/Pavers: These surfaces require a more specialized approach. We use an anchor-in-pipe method where a long aluminum tube is inserted into the ground between the pavers, providing a secure base for the anchor without cracking the stones.
  • Wood/Composite Decks: These require specific wood deck anchors that have a wide flange at the top to securely fasten into the material, preventing them from pulling out as the wood ages or softens.

This is why a professional installation is so important. A knowledgeable technician will use the correct drill bits and tools for each surface and select the right anchors to ensure your cover is installed safely and securely.
