Step 1: Shock and Circulate (The Essential First Chemical)
Before you touch a single vacuum hose, your first priority is to kill off any accumulated bacteria and algae from the winter.
- The Go-To Chemical: Always start by adding 10L of liquid chlorine (or a similar initial shocking dose for your pool size).
- Why Liquid Chlorine? It is the simplest, most powerful, and most cost-effective chemical for this initial blast. Think of it as hitting the reset button on your water.
- The Wait: Once the chlorine is added, let your pool equipment do the heavy lifting. Run your pool for a solid 24 to 48 hours. This allows the chlorine to circulate and kill the invisible stuff while your filter starts removing the initial debris.
Step 2: Vacuuming Smartly (Protect Your Filter!)
After 48 hours of circulation, it’s time to tackle the visible debris (leaves, sediment, etc.). This is where most people make a mistake that shortens the life of their expensive equipment.
