You break out your test kit, expecting to see zero chlorine. But to your surprise, the reading comes back high right in the ideal zone!
So why is your pool turning into a swamp if you have plenty of chlorine?
You are likely experiencing Chlorine Lock (scientifically known as cyanuric acid over-stabilization). Here’s a breakdown of what chlorine lock is, why standard chlorine pucks are usually the cause, and how to fix it once and for all.
What is Chlorine Lock?
In simple terms, chlorine lock happens when the chlorine in your pool gets chemically trapped.
It is physically present in the water, which is why your test strips or fluid kits still register a reading but it has been rendered completely inactive. It loses its ability to sanitize, kill bacteria, or destroy algae.
The Hidden Culprit: Chlorine Pucks (Trichlor)
If you use standard 3-inch slow-dissolving chlorine pucks as your main pool sanitizer, you might be setting yourself up for chlorine lock without even realizing it.
Those pucks are made of a compound called Trichlor. Trichlor isn’t pure chlorine; by weight, it contains:

~45–50% Active Chlorine (the sanitizer)

~50–55% Cyanuric Acid (also called CYA, Stabilizer, or Conditioner)
Why CYA Matters – And Why It Causes Problems
CYA acts as “sunscreen” for chlorine. Without CYA, the sun’s UV rays can destroy up to 90% of your pool’s free chlorine in just two hours. A little CYA (ideally 30 to 50 ppm) is essential to keep your chlorine working.
The catch?

Chlorine gets consumed as it burns off bacteria, algae, and organic debris.

CYA NEVER leaves your pool. It does not evaporate, dissolve away, or break down over time. It stays in the water forever unless physically drained.
Every single puck you float in your skimmer permanently raises your pool’s CYA levels. Over a season or two, your CYA drifts from 40 ppm to 80, 100, or even 150+ ppm.
The Science: How High CYA “Locks” Your Pool
At ideal levels 30-50ppm CYA forms a balanced chemical bond with chlorine, holding it protected from sunlight, but letting go fast enough to attack bacteria when needed.
When CYA levels soar past 70-100ppm

How to Fix Chlorine Lock
Unfortunately, there is no magic chemical you can pour into your pool that dissolves CYA safely and effectively.
1. Dilution is the Only Solution
To lower your CYA levels, you must partially drain your pool (usually 25% to 50% depending on how high the reading is) and refill it with fresh tap water.
2. Switch Your Sanitizer
Once you get your CYA back down to 40-50ppm, stop using pucks every day! Switch to liquid chlorine or powdered shock for daily maintenance. Liquid chlorine provides total sanitation without adding a single drop of CYA.
