Getting your pool ready for closing day saves serious time, protects your equipment from freeze damage, and prevents a total swamp situation come spring.

1. Clean & Balance the Water

  • Balance Chemistry: Test and adjust your pH (7.2–7.6), alkalinity (80–120 ppm), and calcium hardness a few days prior.
  • Shock the Pool: Add a winter shock treatment 24 to 48 hours before closing to kill off any lingering bacteria or algae.
  • Skim and Vacuum: Thoroughly skim the surface, brush the walls, and vacuum the floor. Any organic debris left behind will decompose and stain your liner over the winter.
  • Clean Your Salt Cell: Ensure your salt cell is clean, protected and ready for next spring by using a salt cell cleaning solution to remove all build up and debris from the season.

2. Prep the Filter System

  • Sand Filters: Perform a deep backwash to flush out trapped dirt.
  • Cartridge Filters: Remove the cartridges and spray them down thoroughly with a hose. Soak them in a filter cleaner if they have heavy oil or mineral buildup, then let them dry before storing them inside for the winter.

3. Gather Accessories & Winterizing Hardware Set all your winter gear pool side so your service technician isn’t hunting through the shed.

  • Winterizing Plugs: Heavy duty rubber expansion plugs for the return lines, main drains, and skimmer lines.
  • Gizmos: Threaded freeze protection tubes to screw into your skimmers to absorb ice expansion and protect the housing.
  • Covers & Anchors: Lay out your safety cover or your heavy-duty tarp cover.
  • Water Bags / Tubes: If using a traditional tarp cover, test your water bags for leaks.

4. Clear the Deck

  • Remove all pool toys, floats, skimmer baskets, solar blankets, and automatic pool cleaners.
  • Unbolt handrails and ladders, store them indoors, and spray down the pool deck to keep dirt from blowing under the cover once it’s set.
