The honest answer? It depends far more on your specific yard than the calendar date. While Thanksgiving weekend is a standard default, the true rule of thumb for our local climate is closing once your water temperature consistently stays below 15°C.
Algae growth slows down dramatically in cooler water, making 15°C the sweet spot to balance, sanitize, and cover your pool without risking a green surprise in the spring. Where that threshold falls on your calendar depends on your trees, equipment, and autumn routines.
Heavy Tree Cover
If your yard sits near ravines or heavy foliage, don’t wait for the leaves to fall. Closing in late August or early September lets you skip the worst of the leaf drop entirely. You’ll save hours of skimming, keep your pump basket clear, and protect your liner or plaster from stubborn stains.
Open Yards & Minimal Trees
If you have minimal tree cover nearby, you have far more flexibility. Late September into early October works great. Without falling leaves clogging the filtration system, you can keep the water circulating longer and enjoy a clean view of your backyard well into autumn with minimal upkeep.
Frequent Fall Travellers
If you head south early or travel for work, always close before you leave. An unattended skimmer basket fills up fast. Once blocked, it starves the pump, risks burning out the motor, and disrupts your chemical balance while no one is home to catch it.
Heated Pools
If you use a gas heater or heat pump to extend your swim season, mid-to-late October is entirely realistic. Just ensure your lines are blown out and winterized before the first hard frost hits, sudden freezing temperatures, not mild cold, cause costly pipe and equipment damage.
