Snow on your pool? Here’s the “Crush” Guide to Winter Peace of Mind

Hey everyone,

With the Canadian winter in full swing, our team at Crush Pools has been getting a few calls from homeowners worried about their pool covers. Between the heavy snow dumps and the deep freezes, we know it can look a little scary out there!

We wanted to send a quick update to let you know what’s “business as usual” for a Canadian pool and a few things you can keep an eye on.

1. The “Sagging” Cover: It’s Doing Its Job!

If you see your safety cover dipping low under a heavy pile of snow, don’t worry! These covers are engineered with heavy-duty springs designed to stretch. When the snow gets heavy, the cover sags until it rests on the ice frozen underneath it. This is totally normal. Once the snow melts, those springs will snap the cover right back into its tight, “drum-like” shape.

  • Important: Resist the urge to shovel your cover! You’re more likely to accidentally rip the mesh with a shovel than you are to help it. Just let the snow melt naturally.

2. Water Bags: Room to Breathe

For those using water bag covers, remember that ice needs room to grow.

  • The Expansion Gap: We never fill water bags 100% full because water expands when it freezes. A bag filled to the brim will burst like a balloon in a deep freeze.
  • Check-up: Give your bags a quick look. If any look totally flat, they might have a leak and may need to be replaced to keep your cover secure.

3. Lock-In Covers & Liner Locks

If you have a lock-in cover, take a quick walk around the perimeter. Check to see that the “liner lock” is still holding everything firmly in place. If you see the cover popping out of the track, it’s better to catch it now than during the spring thaw!

4. Why We Use Gizzmos

You might notice the water level in your pool rising as snow melts through the mesh—this is expected! This is exactly why we installed Gizzmos in your skimmers. They act as a “sacrificial” tube that absorbs the pressure of freezing water so your skimmer throat doesn’t crack. Your pool is built to handle the rise and fall of the winter elements.

Sleep easy! Your pool is tucked in for the winter and doing just fine.

If you have a specific concern or something looks a little “off” to you, feel free to snap a photo and email it over to us. We’re always happy to take a look!

Cheers,

The Crush Pools Team
